Condition
Used condition with visible wear to the case, bezel and crystal. The red dial remains well preserved and the mechanical digital display is clearly legible.
Why I bought it
The red dial was the main attraction for me. I like collecting the different colors and case treatments used for these 1970s mechanical digital watches, and this MiG is another variation on the theme from a brand that is rarely seen today.
This MiG is another variation on the Swiss mechanical digital watches of the 1970s. The hour is displayed through the rectangular aperture on the left, while the adjacent rotating disc indicates the minutes against a fixed marker.
The red dial is the feature that gives this example its character. A horizontal graphic runs across the dial and through the display, while the MiG signature, Digital and Swiss occupy the center.
MiG appears to have been a small and now obscure Swiss watch brand. I have found other surviving mechanical digital watches carrying the MiG name, but so far I have not found reliable documentation about the company itself or its history. I therefore prefer not to make assumptions about who manufactured the watches or movements for the brand.
The case combines a brushed outer surface with a dark bezel surrounding the red dial. Together with the large crown and compact display, it has the proportions and styling associated with the period.
I have not confirmed the caliber, so I prefer to leave the movement identification open. For me, this watch is mainly about the combination of the mechanical digital display, the red dial, the unconventional 1970s case design and the mystery surrounding the MiG name.
